Demi-permanent hair color is an ammonia-free formula that deposits pigment just beneath the cuticle, where it fades gradually over 20 to 28 shampoos instead of growing out as a visible root line.
It blends early gray but has limits: most formulas cover up to 70% gray, and once your hair passes about 25% gray, permanent color takes over.
How Demi Color Works
Demi-permanent color is ammonia-free and mixes with a low-volume developer, usually 1.5%–4%. That developer lifts the cuticle slightly so pigment can settle into the first layers of the shaft.
Descriptions of the depth differ. Davines and Wella say the color enters the shaft, while eSalon says it wraps the cuticle as a coating that washes away.
Either way, the pigment stays shallow, so it fades with each shampoo rather than growing out as a line at the roots.
Lift is the other point of disagreement.
Some formulas lift only one level, while DIA Richesse lifts about 1.5. Davines View is acidic and can’t change your natural color, but The Present Time is alkaline and can.
Uses for Demi Color
Demi color is a short-list tool, and these are the jobs it does well:
- Reviving or intensifying color you already have.
- Adding shine.
- Toning brassiness or highlights.
- Blending early gray without a hard line.
- Trying a shade with less commitment.
- Wella adds root-to-tip color, root touch-ups, and toning balayage or highlights.
- For a bolder shade, a colorist can pre-lighten strands with BlondorPlex first so the demi shade pops.
Wella puts the gray job plainly:
Demi-permanent colors are great for creating a beautifully blended root shadow or blending away first grays while appearing completely natural.

If your first grays are the reason you’re looking, this is the use I’d start with.
Gray Coverage and Limits
Demi color blends gray; it doesn’t bury it.
Wella’s Color Touch Plus offers up to 70% gray coverage, while permanent color reaches up to 100%. Coverage varies by product, so treat 70% as a ceiling for that line, not a promise for every box.
I’d switch to permanent once your hair is more than 25% gray. Below that, demi softens the first silver strands into a natural-looking finish.
Lightening is the other limit. Demi is not meant for major lift, and permanent color has the edge here too: it can lighten virgin hair up to two shades without bleach.
For heavy regrowth, a workable split is permanent color on the roots and demi through the lengths and ends.
How Long Demi Color Lasts
Plan on roughly 20 to 28 washes. Published figures land there: about 24 shampoos, around 20 on average, and up to 28 for Davines and Wella Color Touch.
Wider claims run 12–30 washes or up to 8 weeks, and SHINEFINITY is rated up to six weeks. Treat 20 washes as the cautious estimate and 28 as the best case.
Dark hair holds on longest: Davines says up to 28 washes, depending on porosity.
Dry, highly porous hair can outlast the timeframe a colorist quotes. Washing matters just as much.
Shampoos for oily hair, dandruff or deep cleansing strip color fast, while color-protection shampoo, heat protectant and UV spray slow the fade. I’d also add a color-depositing conditioner.
Demi vs. Semi and Permanent Color
Semi-permanent color coats the surface of each strand and fades fastest, at roughly 4–12 washes (about 8 on average). CHI Chromashine, at up to 30 washes, and Matrix SoColor Cult Semi, at up to 42, are the exceptions.
Demi lifts the cuticle slightly and deposits color inside, so it holds about 12–30 washes. Permanent opens the cuticle wider and goes deepest.
| Semi | Demi | Permanent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penetration | Surface coat | Just under the cuticle | Deepest |
| Washes | 4–12 | 12–30 | n/a |
| Gray coverage | Blending | Blending, less than permanent | Up to 100% |
| Commitment | Lowest | Low | Highest |
Davines suggests weighing how often you change color and the condition of your hair. For grays, I’d choose demi.
Care That Slows Fade
A few habits decide how long demi color holds:
- Use a color-protection shampoo. Skip shampoos for oily hair, dandruff and deep cleansing, since they shorten the life of the color.
- Choose color-safe products free of harsh ingredients. Alchemic color-depositing shampoo or conditioner from Davines tops up tone at home between appointments.
- Add a thermal protectant before hot tools and a UV-protection spray before sun. Both extend wear.
- If you want the color gone sooner, wash with a clarifying shampoo and follow with a hydrating conditioner. The conditioner matters because clarifying formulas dry hair out.
- Damage is minimal for most people. Low-volume peroxide lifts the cuticle slightly, and regular conditioning handles that. I’d call it a fair trade.
Moving to Permanent Color
Going from demi to permanent is an open door.
Going the other way is trickier, because permanent gives full coverage and demi lays a more translucent wash over the hair. I’d expect the difference most on gray, where white strands tend to read as glittery highlights instead of disappearing.
Fading has its own quirk. Even a very low concentration of peroxide lifts some natural pigment, so your natural color may not fully return once demi washes out.
Expect hair that’s only slightly lighter, and you may not notice. A shade close to your own, on healthy, less porous hair, gives the best odds of fading back to it.
Asking a Colorist
Bring the photo and settle three things with the colorist: the result you want, your hair’s condition, and your lifestyle.
Both Wella and Davines point to those three. Very porous, dry or damaged hair, or frequent color changes, may steer you toward semi-permanent instead.
Ask about Color Touch for bolder color and gray blending, or SHINEFINITY for toning balayage and highlights. Davines View and The Present Time, Redken Shades EQ, Goldwell Colorance, Igora Vibrance and DIA Richesse are also demi lines.
They’re examples, not one universal formula, so I’d lead with the result you want and let the colorist pick the line.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is demi-permanent hair color?
Demi-permanent color is ammonia-free and uses a low-volume developer (1.5%–4%) to lift the cuticle slightly so pigment settles into the first layers of the hair shaft.
It fades with each shampoo rather than growing out as a visible root line. Because it stays shallow, it offers lower commitment than permanent color.
How long does demi-permanent hair color last?
Demi color lasts roughly 20 to 28 washes.
Treat 20 washes as the cautious estimate and 28 as the best case. Dark hair and highly porous hair hold color longest, while clarifying shampoos and frequent washing strip it faster.
Does demi-permanent color cover gray?
Demi color blends gray rather than burying it.
Wella Color Touch Plus offers up to 70% coverage, while permanent color reaches up to 100%. Switch to permanent once your hair is more than 25% gray.
Is demi-permanent hair color damaging?
Damage is minimal for most people.
Low-volume peroxide lifts the cuticle slightly, and regular conditioning handles that impact. The tradeoff between a gentler process and the slight cuticle lift is fair for most users.
Does demi color wash out completely?
Demi color fades with each shampoo, but your natural color may not fully return once it washes out.
Even very low peroxide lifts some natural pigment, so expect hair that’s only slightly lighter. A shade close to your own, on healthy, less porous hair, gives the best odds of fading back to your starting color.
